THE SHREWSBURY LASSES |
Instantly recognised by their brightly coloured pinafore dresses and often the flash of a garter or two, the Shrewsbury Lasses dance with enthusiasm and enjoyment. The Lasses perform dances in a range of styles including garland dances, short stick and handkerchief dances. Their repertoire includes several composed dances in a traditional style as well as a selection of traditional dances from around the country. Current favourites are ‘Shrewsbury Flourish’ originally written to teach at workshops at the Sidmouth International Festival - we now know of more than a dozen teams who regularly perform this dance. |

| Another favourite is ‘Woodlands’, a handkerchief dance named after what used to be the local youth hostel, which for many years was a practice venue. ‘Severn Steps’, also with a local name, is a garland dance performed by seven dancers but named after Shrewsbury’s meandering river.
The team includes some original members as well as those who have recently joined. We have a variety of occupational backgrounds, and mixed ages, but all have a desire to enjoy dancing and performing. The team motto when out dancing is "smile"!
